Run Find Your Happy Pace

finding my happy pace in running and life

Beating the Heat for My Long Run

So today’s high was supposed to be a predicted 100.  Oh and humid, gotta LOVE humidity.  So last night I conferred with my new best buddy, the local on-line hourly forecast.  According to the forecast my best shot for any sort of comfort was going to be between 6;30 – 8 AM.  With a whopping low of 76 with high humidity.  So after considering my babysitting options and setting up the kids I was set for sometime early morning.   On Friday I also consulted with my Facebook page buddies (thank you) for some additional heat related running tips.

Last night the weather got crazy.  High winds (60+ mph) and a thunderstorm woke and kept me up between 11:30 – 12:30.  I flicked on the tv to make sure I wasn’t missing any tornado warnings.  Yup it was that bad out.  There weren’t any, thank goodness. Gotta love VA weather!  Irritated on one hand but hopeful this would change the forecast on the other hand.  aka..hoping for a silver lining 😉

After getting up at 6:05 and eating my usual Whole Wheat Potato Bread with peanut butter (I cannot run on an empty stomach, some can, I cannot), dressing, waking up the babysitter, hydrating and umm downloading (I will leave this up to your imagination, I know my buddies know what I mean, lol) but lets just say it is a really good thing before a long run…enough said. I was out the door by 6:50.  It was 76 as predicted and humid!  Love it.  So no luck breaking the humidity with last night’s thunderstorm.   I already had a plan to HYDRATE, Hydrate, hydrate.  In addition to my usual water I did one of my fuel belt bottles with a Gatorade /water mix.  This is a really great thing to do on hot long runs.  I also took the advice of my buddy Amanda who suggested wetting my hair down before leaving the house.  Great idea!

Before leaving I also decided to go for a time goal rather than purely a distance goal.  In other words I knew the elements might be against me but I also knew about how long it should take me to do 9 miles.  I read a really great article last week about pace / distance, etc. ( I linked it below).  Worth a look for sure.

Runner’s World “Ask Coach Jenny

So off I went.  Luckily there was a nice breeze for my first 4.5 miles.  Thank goodness because miles 1-3ish usually suck for me, recently I was glad to hear I am not the only one who has these issues.  So persist new runners!  It gets better the longer you go, really it does.  It takes me about 3 miles just to get everything moving loose and smooth.  Thus why I am not a big fan myself of 5K’s (3.11 miles), by the time I feel good…it’s over, lol.  Anyway for some reason when I turned around (I did an out and back loop) the breeze was totally gone.  UGGH!!  How does this happen people?!?  If you know please share!   And of course this was at the “running into the sun”  part of my run.  (insert whinny baby face here)

In the end I was only short by less than a quarter-mile.  Pace wasn’t all that bad and ending temp was 78 with slightly higher humidity.  So I consider it a win-win for the day.

Next week will be a fall back week for my long run.  I will only be doing 8.  It looks like a really HOT week coming up, I may just keep my hair wet all week! 😉

Jillian Michaels Body Revolution update and RnR training week 2

Hello all,

Well I have to admit I love Jillian Micheals.  However, I HATE workout #5!  I hope to build up to “love”, but right now I hate it.  Hard, hard, hard.  However I know new workouts bring new challenges.  By next week’s end I hope to report that I can actually do them and not look like I am about to die.  Although she does admit in either workout 5 or 6, I cannot remember which, that she hopes you are feeling like throwing up.  Well alrighty then, feeling like throwing up…check.

I didn’t have any weight change this week.  But I am sure that has to do with my camping trip with the kids and the S’more / healthy food ratio.  Just couldn’t pass up one S’more.  Ok maybe it was 3 or more over the course of the trip, but who’s counting.  However on a happy note I did continue to have measurement changes, so all is good.  I have managed to do all my running and JM workouts this week, with a little juggling of the schedule.  So still on track.  I can see that as my running schedule continues I may have to tweak the JM workouts a little too.  I had a hard time Tuesday doing 6 miles and Workout #6,  I did it, but it wasn’t pretty.  Saturday long run is scheduled for 9 miles, probably going to skip the JM cardio but we will see.

So that’s all just a short update.  Looking forward to kicking workout #5’s butt next week, I hope.

Don’t forget the Mini Peace Runner Girl Decal giveaway ends June 30th at midnight!  Do you have a product you would like to me to review and/or giveaway?  Just message me here or on facebook!

God Called Me To Pray…Won’t You Join Me

Thank you God for giving me the ability to run, the love of writing and the complete access to you through prayer.  I love that all can combine to do good in your name.

I haven’t been blogging here all that long. However in this short time I have met some really great people.  I have enjoyed sharing my stories, meeting new friends and just writing about things that I love.  I have also been blessed to met some really great Christian women and runners.  I have shared my writing with my bible study sisters and been given great support from them to continue to write.  And so I have.  Today I am especially glad I have continued to blog.  Why you might ask?  Well just today I got a message on one of my latest blogs for a woman I have never met.   The woman (I’ll call her “D”) found my blog when she was searching for some reviews about Jillian Michaels 90 day Body Revolution.  I didn’t even realize I would show up that way?  God works in mysterious ways.

As I was reading her comment I came to find out we have a lot in common.  We both love the Lord. We’re both military wives, mothers of three and currently live in the same area.  But “D” shared something really special with me.  Her 10-year-old son is battling cancer...for the third time.  I wasn’t expecting that.  My first thoughts and reply were that my family would pray for her son and her family.  She in turn sent me a link to more info on her son’s story.  His story is touching and heartbreaking.  While reading his story something hit me.  (Ok it was probably God was hitting me over the head).  I can pray yes, but I can try and do more.  I can use this simple running/life blog to contact all of you so we can all pray for “D’s” son and family.

I have learned through my bible study group that prayers are like the sweet incense to God.  He wants us to pray. He wants us to have a relationship with him.  Praise him in good times and bad.  So I figure how much sweeter the aroma will be with more of us praying for “D’s” son and family.  Therefore, I invite all of you to take a minute today, tomorrow daily or whenever you can to pray for this special boy.

Oh yes..I also found out D’s son loves jokes!  If you have any you want to share let me know.  I will be sure to pass them along!  Thanks everyone!

Jillian M Body Revolution Update and First Official Training Week

I did it!  I made it through another week of Jillian Michaels.  Did I tell you she rocks?!  I am really loving this 90 day body revolution.  I continue to get stronger and my measurements continue to change for the better.  Workouts 3 and 4 were not as scary as I had anticipated.  Thank goodness.  I think having a good head start (running program) has helped a lot.  Each week I continue to make myself proud with what I have accomplished.  Now I do have one confession….I did miss one workout this week.  I didn’t do the JM cardio on Wed.  I had an appointment Wed morning and decided to put it off until evening, well that didn’t happen.  But as promised in my last blog, I wasn’t too hard on myself.  Wed also happened to be a scheduled running day off so I did NOTHING as far as exercise goes that day.  And you know what, I am alright with that.  Because in addition to JM I also started my official Rock n Roll Half training schedule.  The half is in Sept.

As far as training goes, I have decided to follow the “Train Like a Mother” half marathon “Finish It” program along with continuing the Jillian Michaels Body Revolution Program.  I looked into the “Own It” Half Marathon Version, but just didn’t see that happening with the hubby away and because I really want to continue JM. This way I feel like I am getting the best of both worlds.  So in a way its kind of like my “Finish/Own It” program.  I also have been concentrating on my running form.  When I first started running I apparently was a heel striker (hey at the time I had no idea).  This lead to shin splints.  I don’t even want to talk about that!  So I forced myself to become a forefoot runner.  I switched to a very light minimalist type show and it worked for a while, but my feet always felt tired and sore after any long runs, even after months and months.  Then in December I developed PF.  I switched to a more supportive yet still fairly lightweight shoe (I had been running in Saucony Kinvara 2’s now I am in Asics Gel Excel 33’s)  so I could make it thru my scheduled (and PAID for!!) 3 half marathons.  What a HUGE difference!  I visited a reputable running store and the man spent lots of time with me to find the right shoe.  My feet were very thankful and I have never looked back.  In the end I actually did 4 half marathons Feb-May instead of the scheduled 3. 🙂

My goal now is to become an efficient midfoot runner.  I am really concentrating on all the Chi Running techniques I have read and slowly introduced since July of last year (it takes most people quite a while to learn)  and I know it is finally paying off.  This week I did a 6 miles with an average pace of under 10min/mile.  I had never sustained that before.  And the great thing is I never got tired or fatigued during the entire run!  It was an AWESOME feeling.  I know the weather contributed a lot too.  We had been having some really cool/comfortable running weather recently.  But hey I will take it!!  The rest of this week has been HOT and humid, I was glad to have already gotten that 6 miles in.

So my goals for this upcoming week will be to continue to work on my form, stretch a lot, and try to keep up the schedule.

Running with my Lovies

School’s out!  Yeah for them…possible chaos for my training schedule. Especially since Dad is currently deployed.  However I did manage to get a long run in alone this weekend, 🙂 and today I got a decent paced 4 miles in with all three of my kids.  Yup all three, even my 12-year-old.  Surprisingly he asked me if he could come with me.  He wants to try out for the football team in August, and he realizes he better get in better shape starting now.  Good plan.  I was proud of him for coming along.

For todays outing he opted to bike, along with his sister (mini-me)  He knew he wasn’t going to run the 3+ miles on tap for today right from the get go.  Good thinking.  Baby steps I told him.  That way you don’t get discouraged.  Mini-me was all about riding along, whew.  I am glad I no longer have to push two kids.  I only had to push Mr. Cutesie-face.  Here is a picture of my view, it made me smile a few times on the way.  I was a proud Momma.

Our “run”  turned out a lot better than I expected.  Minimal whining (Mr. CF wanted to ride his bike too), no one crashed into each other,  and we managed a steady peaceful pace.  Ahh, SUCCESS!  Here’s hoping the rest of the summer goes as smoothly.

Cross Training with Ms. Jillian Update Week 3

Week 3 is almost complete for my Jillian Michaels Body Revolution program.  The awesome thing is I am definitely feeling stronger and things are toning up.  Both these things are good and exciting.  I am down about a pound and a half.  Remember I am not doing this for serious weight loss but cross/strength training.  The thing that really makes me happy is that my measurements are shrinking and changing.  Now that’s what I’m talking about!

As an added bonus I took a run with Mr. Cutesie this morning and I can honestly say it was the first time I truly noticed a change as far as my running goes.  My overall pace was something I can be proud of (not necessarily fast, but steady).  That’s not always the case with the extra 40+ pounds of the kid/jogging stroller combo along for the ride.  More amazingly to me is that my core felt strong and everything just felt “right”.  Do you know what I mean?  I am loving this new feeling of strength again.  I can honestly say I found MY happy pace today.  Its something we all strive for isn’t it, but we don’t always achieve.  Today I did it and for that I am a happy momma.

Here’s to strength, determination and Finding Your Happy Pace!  Can I get a Wohoo?!

Summer vs Moms in Training

Tomorrow is the last day of school for my kids.  Yeah!  I love spending extra time with them, even with all the challenges I know it will bring.  You know keeping them occupied, moving and not sitting on the couch for hours, those challenges.   (Especially with a 12-year-old that loves video games more that girls. Wait is that a bad thing?) Oh that and making sure they don’t drive each other or me totally insane by September.  Yes that will be a great feat.  We will be visiting the pool, zoo, library, blueberry picking etc. You know mandatory family fun time.  Yes I force them to spend time with me and like it. 🙂

As for ME time:  I have already signed up to do Rock and Roll Half Marathon in September. So in preparation of summer training I have been getting up earlier to fit in my cross-training workouts before the kids get up.  Granted I have fumbled down the stairs and been almost comatose a few mornings, but so far so good.  I haven’t tripped down the stairs (or over the cats), dropped any weights on myself, or fallen asleep mid-rep.  And I haven’t missed a scheduled workout…yet.  Go me!!  This getting up early thing seems to be working so I am going to try to keep it up.

As for running, I have been fitting that in after the kids leave for school, or with my youngest in tow on non preschool days.  I am also lucky enough to have a treadmill for days I just can’t make it out.  The dreadmill….I mean treadmill, yes treadmill that’s the name,  is last resort for me.  I much prefer to run outside.  Now I just need to figure out when I am going to run.  Hmmm….

So “MY” personal summer challenge will be to stick to a training schedule for Rock n Roll in September while the hubby is deployed .  Yes that complicates things a bit.  But I have been in this position before, we can manage it.

Many of you may also be a “Mom In Training” for the summer.  So if this helps here is the mantra I am planning on using:

“Do your best. Don’t beat yourself up too much if you miss a workout, train your butt off every chance you get. And don’t forget to Find Your Happy Pace in running and life”

Good luck guys!  And have a great summer.

Diva and Dudes Bling!

A few weeks back I posted about the virtual 5k I ran.  The Divas and Dudes 5k.  Remember my hideous “dreadmill” picture.  Yuck!  Anyway the virtual run was to support Sandra a TNT (team in training) runner.   TNT is raising money in support of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.  Nice work :).  She is training for the Nike Women’s Half Marathon on October 14th.

Yesterday I receive my Bling…..gotta love bling!  Here is a picture.

Sandra has another run coming up in July, with a different but equally cute medal, if you are interested.  Click below to check it out:

My Personal Body Revolution

Well 2 weeks ago I started doing a “modified” version of Jillian Michaels Body Revolution.  By modified I mean doing all the workouts and cardio DVD’s in addition to my usual running schedule of 3-4 days a week.  However I have not followed the diet plan to the “T”.  I cannot cut out all those carbs and still keep up my running schedule.  Low carb diets make me shaky and quite frankly a little crazy!  Ask my kids 😉  I have been watching my food intake and am making better food choices.  In all honesty I am not looking to lose a ton of weight ie: Biggest Loser.  Just want to strengthen and tighten things up a little to help prevent future running injury.

Therefore I am glad to be cross training and weight training again.  Since December I had been focused on running, with some Yoga thrown in, in order to complete the 4 Half Marathons I had on tap February – May.  If you have followed my blog/facebook page,  you may also know I had started some kettle bells about a month ago.  Since starting the JM program I have not had time to fit it in.  Note to self “write yourself up a schedule girl!”  Anyhow, things have gone really well.   I feel sore some days, but definitely stronger and more toned already.  I am down a few lbs and a few inches all around.

Tomorrow I start week 3 and a new set of workouts and cardio.  Excellent I thought, since I was getting a little bored with the same workouts for two weeks.  However, ahem (clears tought with a tinge of sarcasm) the other night I previewed week three workout 3.  To be honest…….I’m a little scared.  And I am also thinking by Tues I’m going to be walking a little funny.  OK probably more than a little.  JM definitely turns up the “hurt factor” these next few weeks.  Still I am excited.  No really I am I swear.  I love the new challenge and look forward to the changes to come.  Listen, less than a year ago I had to have my neighbor Sue convince me I could run a half marathon without facing certain death.  Actually come to think of it I am not even sure how she finally convinced me? Hmm, well she does have 4 kids so maybe it was some crazy Mommy voodoo magic or something.  Man I need to learn that trick.  Well, whatever it was I did it and only have thanks in my heart for her and my training partner for helping me see I could do so much more than I ever believed.  Therefore this too I shall survive.

So pray for me cause I am pretty sure I am going to need it this week.  I’ll keep you updated.
