Summer vs Moms in Training

Tomorrow is the last day of school for my kids.  Yeah!  I love spending extra time with them, even with all the challenges I know it will bring.  You know keeping them occupied, moving and not sitting on the couch for hours, those challenges.   (Especially with a 12-year-old that loves video games more that girls. Wait is that a bad thing?) Oh that and making sure they don’t drive each other or me totally insane by September.  Yes that will be a great feat.  We will be visiting the pool, zoo, library, blueberry picking etc. You know mandatory family fun time.  Yes I force them to spend time with me and like it. 🙂

As for ME time:  I have already signed up to do Rock and Roll Half Marathon in September. So in preparation of summer training I have been getting up earlier to fit in my cross-training workouts before the kids get up.  Granted I have fumbled down the stairs and been almost comatose a few mornings, but so far so good.  I haven’t tripped down the stairs (or over the cats), dropped any weights on myself, or fallen asleep mid-rep.  And I haven’t missed a scheduled workout…yet.  Go me!!  This getting up early thing seems to be working so I am going to try to keep it up.

As for running, I have been fitting that in after the kids leave for school, or with my youngest in tow on non preschool days.  I am also lucky enough to have a treadmill for days I just can’t make it out.  The dreadmill….I mean treadmill, yes treadmill that’s the name,  is last resort for me.  I much prefer to run outside.  Now I just need to figure out when I am going to run.  Hmmm….

So “MY” personal summer challenge will be to stick to a training schedule for Rock n Roll in September while the hubby is deployed .  Yes that complicates things a bit.  But I have been in this position before, we can manage it.

Many of you may also be a “Mom In Training” for the summer.  So if this helps here is the mantra I am planning on using:

“Do your best. Don’t beat yourself up too much if you miss a workout, train your butt off every chance you get. And don’t forget to Find Your Happy Pace in running and life”
