Sunday’s “Inspiration for your Perspiration” 9/16/2012

Friend….a person attached to another by feelings of affection or personal regard.

Best Friend…a person attached to another heart to heart.

Do you have a “Bestie” and amigo, compadre…someone you wouldn’t want to be without?  I do and you know what?  We messed up a few months back.  We let little things fester and become a wall in between us.  NOT good.  Instead of talking to each other we “talked” to others. Instead of being real we tried to push things aside.  Also NOT good.  We let life happen around us instead of taking charge of the situation.  We let the stress of our hubby’s deployments get in the way of helping each other.  We also put someone we both care about in the middle of our ugly situation.  Sorry C.M.

Has something like that ever happened to you?  I bet it has.  God gave us friends and best friends for a reason, but like all relationships we must tend the weeds and keep the soil fertile.  We must prune away the bad so the only the good, strong, sturdy branches remain.

John 15:2
He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.

Is it comfortable, no usually not.  But what remains behind is so much stronger and more beautiful.  And so it should be with our relationship with God.  You have to make time and sacrifice for the one who truly loves you.  Who loves you above all others, who died for you so that you may live.  So often in this crazy world we forget what the most important things should be.  FAITH, HOPE and LOVE.

1 Corinthians 13:13
And now these three remain: faithhope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

So make sure you spend some time each day with the one who will always love you, will always forgive you and will never leave you…God.  Get in the word, help someone in need, take care of a relationship that needs mending.  I am glad I did.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

9 Two are better than one,
because they have a good return for their labor:
10 If either of them falls down,
one can help the other up.
But pity anyone who falls
and has no one to help them up.

“Running stuff for happy runners” now OPEN!

So most of you know I love slip resistant headbands. I cannot run with a visor or hat in the summer. Hat = head feeling like its going to pop off.  So I always wear some kind of headband when I run and wear sunglasses. I also believe that running should be fun, not boring.  Well after much thought and lots of laughs my friend Cara from Running In Sanity and I have started our own little company.

Running Happy….fun stuff for happy runners.”   (click here for our Etsy page)

You can click also visit us on our Facebook page  “Running Happy”

and follow us on Twitter @RunningHappy1 for the latest updates.

We decided to combine our love of running, fun and of course cupcakes 🙂 and start our own little project.  Plus, well we needed a way to support our race and “Bling” addiction. 😉

Initially we are carrying “Happy Bands” no-slip headbands and a selection of Runner Decals.   Happy Bands are available in everyday and holiday prints with many, many more prints and sizes to come.

Holiday prints 1 1/2″:

Holiday prints 7/8 inch:

Everyday Prints 1 1/2″

Everyday Prints 7/8 “

We will also carry special “limited edition” selections throughout the year.  And our holiday bands will change seasonally.  We would love suggestions and would be happy to work with you.  Group discounts will be available for larger quantities.  Feel free to contact us with any special requests and we will do our best to accommodate.   (Psst….coming soon very special “mouse” and “kitty” prints will be available.)  Keep up with us on Facebook or Twitter for the latest updates.

In addition to Happy Bands we will also carrying a selection of Runner Decals, because we love them and they are a lot of fun!  Those decals are in process and should be on the Etsy page by next week

Peace Runner Girls     (various colors)                                                                                                                                         Large ” i run for cupcakes” decal

Insanity 60 Day Challange and My Meet My Workout Partner, Handana (Giveaway)

***Contest is now CLOSED!  Thanks for entering, winner announced soon!  ***

OK so I decided to go the Insanity route for the next 60 days.  I even joined a group with fellow Sweat Pink Ambassador at CrazyHealthyFit  for motivation.  I have a few words for this workout….sweaty, killer, butt-kicking!!  Now you all know I love Jillian Michaels, but Shawn T kicked my butt, hung me out to dry and then beat six ways from Sunday.  However I have to admit I like his style a lot.  Hard? Very.  (I was also glad I had done JM Body Revolution prior to starting this.)  Today’s workout was Plyo. Cardio Circuit.  No joke the only workout where I actually loved the stretching as a chance to, I don’t know, breathe. But I am going to do my best to finish the 60 days.  I’ll keep you updated.

I also was VERY, VERY glad to have my Handana!  Handana you ask?  No, no not Hannah Montana…HANDANA.  Here “she” is.  Check out this cute little invention……

I borrowed this right from the Handana site….

It is a high performance fashionable sweatband that wraps around your hand. You can us

both sides of your hand to wipe sweat from your neck or forehand,

while leaving your hand completely free.”

However I’ll just call her my new workout partner.  I wore it for the entire workout.  It’s so soft and comfy that I wasn’t distracted by it at all.  I wouldn’t say I forgot it was there but that’s only because it was so useful, seriously.  I think the Insanity people should hook up with Handana and just include it as part of each package, just my opinion.

Check this out.  Would you rather be in group A or group B:

Group A

  • carry around a sweaty towel
  • wipe your face on your already sweaty tank or tee?  (usually useless and well…gross)
  • have sweat dripping into and stinging your eyes

Group B

  • have to carry around nothing extra
  • have a soft cute and useful accessory
  • keep yourself hands free
  • wipe sweat on the go

I know which group I want to be in.  Handana is great for the hot workouts indoors and out, but I am thinking it’s going to be really useful in the winter too.  Now let’s get real here for a second runners.  What happens to you when your out on a run, in the winter, and miles from home?  No I am not talking about having to pee (although that happens but that’s another post entirely) Your nose starts to run!  Ugh.  Carrying around tissues isn’t exactly way up there on my list of “to go” items.  So yes I will be using this for my nose too I am sure.  The best thing is I can just toss it in the washing machine and hang to dry.

Handanas come in an array of colors for both women and men.

And since I loved Handana sooo much I asked if they would send me another to share with one of you!  They said YES!  So who wants to try one?  Up to 4 chances to enter:

  1. Check out all the cool colors for Handana at their website My Handana let me know which color you like
  2. Check out their Handana on Facebook and let them know I sent you
  3. Follow me on Twitter and tweetI want to win a @myhandana from @runfyhp
  4. Sign up to Follow my blog.  (you don’t want to miss a thing, especially if you win!)

“Inspiration for your Perspiration” 9/9/2012

This week I wanted to share one of my favorite passages in the bible:

Psalm 91:4  He will cover you with his feathers,  and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.

The image I create in my mind every time I read this passage makes me smile.  I imagine peace, softness, love and tenderness.  Yet at the same time strength, safety and protection.  Like the love of a mother holding her newborn baby.  Yet the fierce protection of a lion.  Psalm 91:4 brings me comfort when I am down or things are feeling just way out of control.  There is so much in this life we cannot control so many bad things that happen that leave us wondering why?

But we must learn to trust that God in his awesome power has a wing to cover us and protect us always.  That with every struggle, with every heartache there is a lesson to be learned, an open window a new path to follow.  He will lead us there if we listen and trust in his protection.  Even in the storm he is there protecting us.  He will never leave us.

Have a blessed week everyone!

YOU are a Runner

Dedicated to all the mother runners and but especially those of

MRTT Virginia Beach / Chesapeake

I lace my sneakers just like you

Get up early when I don’t want to

I sweat, I stink, try not to think, about the miles ahead

Instead I treasure how far I’ve come and keep running straight ahead

MY race, MY place, MY happy’s where I love to be

It’s not about how fast I am, it’s about my integrity

And when I’m finally finished, whether mile 3, 5 or 13

I stretch and drink (man I DO stink) but this is what I know..

I AM a mother runner no matter how fast or far I go!

Mr. Cutesie Face On His Way

For my little Mr. Cutesie Face, my youngest child, on his first day of Kindergarten 9/4/2012.  Best of Luck, Mommy loves you and I know you’ll be great!

My little man, your on your way

Growing so fast, time slips away

Reach for the stars, yet still for my hand

Go out and be the best that you can

My heart take with you, as you go

I’ll miss you much, I’ll miss you so

Proud of you, I’ll always be

My little man, the last of 3

Hug kiss nosey, love you so

Your on your way …..ready, set, GROW!!

I didn’t think I would be so emotional this day, but then it hit me that he is the last Kindergartener I will have.  And he is soooo sweet and snuggly to his Momma.  He loves to call my name just to say “Mom……I love you”  randomly throughout the day, so sweet.  Its going to be quiet around here in the afternoon.

Rock n Roll Virginia Beach – Hot, Humid and a Personal Victory

I competed in my sixth half marathon on Sunday.  The Rock and Roll Virginia Beach Half was also the anniversary of my first ever half marathon.

Pre-Race Dinner

For my past 4 half marathons I have done a chicken fajita pre-race dinner.  I PR’d in twice.  So Why mess with a good thing?  My friend from Running In Sanity was generous in hosting (yet again) the pre-race dinner for all of us racing plus kids and family.  She is the best!  YUM!  So far so good.

Race Morning

I knew it was going to be rough when we left for the race at 4:45 AM and it was 90% humidity and already in the 70’s.  I just thought “Oh man this just doesn’t feel good for a PR today.”  In all honesty I wasn’t totally surprised, as most of the summer had been terribly humid, but I was hoping for more comfortable conditions.  Well, that was not happening it was what is was…..gross.

Seven of us rode in together and then took a shuttle to the starting line. The shuttles ran smoothly and were actually a great alternative to parking down by the Oceanfront.  We took a few pre-race photos, did the usual port-o-pottie trip(s) 🙂  and were ready to go.

We separated into our corrals as the MC made announcements about the extreme conditions, warned people to not try to PR today, drink fluids, walk, etc. Umm you know you’re in trouble when they warn you before the race even starts.  The only saving grace was the cloudy overcast skies. Thank goodness. I was already dripping sweat by mile 1.5.  Before 6 miles I had to walk a bit, it was just that harsh.  Luckily the water stops were plentiful.  My only complaint was that the later water stops fell behind in filling cups and you lost time waiting for water.  It just was not an option to pass or move on without water in those weather conditions.  Some of my friends behind me said that one of the stations actually ran out of cups….not good.  There were hoses set up along the corse to run under and at one point I even saw bus “cooling stations” on the course.  I also saw plenty of walkers this race.  PR was pretty much out the window by this point, mentally and physically.  It was going to be a “better safe than sorry” kind of day.  The big joke was the one weather flag on the course.  The flag was blue and listed conditions as “normal” Apparently someone out there has a sense of humor.

Last week I had asked about the “Galloway Method” on my Facebook page,  mostly just out of curiosity.  Although I had not trained this way I was glad to have it planted in the back of my mind.  I started to get that tingly overheated feeling about half way through the race.  (Up to mile 6 I had held a fairly decent pace.)  at that point I changed  my goal  from “PR” to “Finish”. After mile 7 I gave into the walk/run method and was glad I did.  I did a 2 minute run / 1 min walk for miles 7-12.  I have never done that much walking in a half before, however I do believe it was better than if I had just continued to run it out.

RnR gave out wet sponges to each runner at around mile 10? (they did no do that last year).  Oh thank goodness, those were a life saver and I held on to mine until about mile 12.  I also ran into my bestie at mile 11.  She also admitted that the race had been brutal for her.  We ended up parting ways again as I continued my walk/run method up the overpass at mile 12.  Just finishing with a better time than my first RnR would have to be good enough today.  Mile 13 was kind of a blur of walk, run, thank God it’s almost over.

In the end I did beat my first RnR time.  I am very proud of myself for being able to cross that line.  I ran smart and that was the right call. Who knew at 41 I would have 6 half marathons under my belt.  Go me!!  All the other reviews I have read have gone something like this….brutal, extreme humidity, hottest ever etc. and I concur.  So my post race cupcake was well deserved!

See I really do run for Cupcakes!

I don’t know if it was the heat or just me but I didn’t feel like there was a ton of course spectator participation this year.  There were many people who were literally just standing there?  Kinda weird, not a whole lot of cheering going on.  I made it a point to thank anyone who actually did cheer, they may never know how much that helped.   I think the heat even got to the spectators.

My only wish would be for RnR to think about moving this race to later in the year here.  September in Virginia is just a “tad” bit too HOT (ok more than a tad) but I have a feeling that won’t happen.  Next year I am thinking maybe the relay would be a better option.

“Kids you need to listen to the babysitter”  “And be good. And get along”.

When I finally do make it out the door, it’s nice to find my happy pace.  And get a little me time.  So I was really excited when Gone for a Run sent me this pink “I found my happy pace” cinch sack.  Isn’t it cute!  I love to throw things in it like the kids snacks and drinks we are headed out the door.  Not only is it a great bag it’s a nice reminder to have around when things are crazy!
