Run Find Your Happy Pace

finding my happy pace in running and life

MRTT Winter Runnerland, Did I PR? And Channeling my Inner Giada

I ran Moms Run This Town Winter Runnerland this past weekend.  We got some snow/ice here in Virginia Beach on Friday (we ran on Sunday) and so me being the “cold” wimp I have turned in to, I was not looking forward to it.  You would never know I spend most of my life in CT.  I freeze when its anything less than 50, lol.  Along with my weather woes I have been following the Run Less, Run Faster Plan from Runner’s World lately.  Run less…yes, run harder DEFINITELY!  So my running mojo was a little off.  However I am happy to say I L O V E D the 10K.  First off what’s not to love about running with 25 other MRTT mammas!  Whohoo!  But I absolutely fell in love with the Cape Henry Trail that runs through First Landing State Park.  I have a secret inner passion for trail running.  I have hiked there before with the kids, but had never ran this trail before.  Despite the patches of snow/ice left over from Friday, it was a beautiful run.  I felt good, my pace was very comfortable and I hit my Happy Pace for sure.  I think it will just be one of those great runs you wish you could always have.

We did an out and back for the 10K.  On the way out I mostly ran alone.  There was a group ahead and a group behind so I never felt alone.  On the loop back I hooked up with a few ladies and it was nice to chat and keep, what was for me a very good pace.  Did I PR?  I think I did.  You see I use Runtastic, problem is I keep my phone in my iFitness belt.  I had to turn it on before we headed out so I could get it in there.  By the time we took off I think it was on for about 1-2 minutes.  So there is a very good possibility I did PR 🙂  So happy.   Gives me more confidence for The Disney Princess Half.

P.S.  Gotta tell you I really enjoy the ladies from my chapter of MRTT.  I recommend checking to see if there is a chapter in your area too.

Channeling my Inner Giada

As in Giada De Laurentis.  😉  Why?  Well first and foremost my husband thinks she’s a hottie…true story.  I have also been trying to work on eating cleaner and making more things from scratch.  Tonight I tackled homemade vegetarian meatballs.  And I killed it!!  Wahoo.  Now I did not create the recipe, but I didn’t mess it up either and for me that’s saying something.  Never the greatest cook I do have my occasional bright spots.  This is one of them.  These are my pics, aren’t they adorable 🙂  (yes I am a proud “meat”ball mama)

Sunday’s “Inspiration for your Perspiration” Snowflakes 1/27/2013

I feel worn, with a loss of “Inspiration” to share.  It’s been hard for me to balance faith, family, running and life lately.  Some days I feel like I’m doing so much and nothing all at the same time.  Spinning my wheels if you will.  It’s like having a plan that never gets fulfilled, or taking one step forward and two back.  Has this ever happened to you?

I feel behind in my relationship with God, my half marathon training…my life.  I joined a bible study group that is doing “James” by Beth Moore and have failed to do most of the work and missed too many meetings. 🙁  The two flickers of light for me right now are my January Prayer challenge (which I must admit I have NOT been 100% successful with) and reading “The Purpose Driven Life” by Rick Warren.  And yes if you’ve been following me it is taking me forever to get thru it, not that it isn’t good awesome.  That should kind of tell you how life has been lately.

Thank goodness for that book!  I read the perfect few chapters these past few nights, about how our relationship with God can sometimes seem so very distant.  BINGO that’s me.  But it also offered these glimpses of hope

  • it happens to everyone
  • it might be a “test” to see just how “faithful” you really are
  • God is always near even when you don’t “feel” it

So if your going through something similar, let me tell you, you’re not alone.  Maybe we can pray for each other.

Therefore I am attempting today, and going forward, to see God in the little things each day instead of reaching for that feeling.  You know?  I need to take the time to look into my kids faces, remember how much I love them, and what a true blessing they are.  I have to realize that even the winter cold and wind serve a purpose that He has planned.  Even as the snow falls today and I grumble (a lot) I need to see the beauty in every snowflake.  Every snowflake and every individual is special, has purpose, and was made for God’s glory.  And maybe that was to draw me in a little closer to Him.

As the cold wind blows, the snowflakes fall.

Crystalized sparkling beauty in every tender flake

each crafted in its own special way.

Gently drifting away from the heavens down to earth.

But as they fall they do not fall away from God,

for each serves a purpose, just as we do.

Now is the time for the snowflake to fulfill its purpose

and bring glory to the Lord,

if only for a short period of time.

Whether it lands and quickly disappears or gathers with others to

bring praise, like a congregation of a church body,

it is all for Him.

Lord let my life whether long or short fulfill the purpose for which you have made me.

Help me to make you the center of my time here, for your glory.  Amen

Guest Post for “Inspiration for your Perspiration”

I had to go out of town for the long weekend.  Here is a wonderful guest post for you.  I want to thank Laura, who is the founder of Girls Gone Sporty, and a great woman for stepping in for today’s Inspiration for your Perspiration.

In the future I hope to share other great bloggers and fitness buffs who also share a special relationship with God.  Please enjoy and feel free to leave a comment for Laura.  Have a blessed week!

Walk with God

“I instruct you in the way of wisdom
and lead you along straight paths.
When you walk, your steps will not be hampered;
when you run, you will not stumble.
Hold on to instruction, do not let it go;
guard it well, for it is your life.”

  • Proverbs 4: 11-13

Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.”

  • Isaiah 30:21

I took one of my dogs on a walk one night. It was cold, but clear, a rarity for Oregon in November. While I walk I usually try to pray or talk with God, but on this particular night my mind kept wandering to nonsense I didn’t need to think about. Finally, I looked up at the bright moon and the shadows of distant hills and I prayed, “Lord, take my mind, take my words.”

I knew I needed to work more when I got home, so I prayed further, “Lord, give me the right words tonight. Let me know what you would have me write.” I looked down from the moon as I walked past a local church and on the church’s billboard was the phrase, “Exercise Daily. Walk with the Lord.”

I thought, “Huh. That’s interesting.”

And I got to thinking…what’s so significant about “walking with the Lord?” Why do we use that particular phrase? There’s got to be a reason. The more I thought about it, the more I started connecting the dots between different Bible stories. For instance, Adam liked to walk with God in the Garden of Eden. Jesus called the disciples to follow him as he walked along the lake shore. The Israelites wandered in the desert for forty years. Saul saw Jesus when he was walking along the road to Damascus. There seemed to be a trend there…significant spiritual things taking place as people moved.

So, I looked up the word “walk” on an online concordance and discovered 210 instances of the word “walk,” “walked” and “walking” that appear throughout the Bible.

I know you’re probably thinking, “So what?” Walking was the primary form of locomotion back then. People walked to get from one place to another, so of course the Bible will reference the word “walk” regularly.

But the word “walk” is often referenced as an act of character rather than a physical verb:

  • “Walk in obedience”
  • “Walk faithfully”
  • “Walk in peace”
  • “Walk in love”
  • “Walk in the way of righteousness”
  • “Walk in the way of insight”
  • “Walk in wisdom”
  • “Walk humbly”
  • “Walk uprightly”

As I kept looking at the references, I noticed a trend in the New Testament, too. The word “walk” appears again and again in reference to Jesus’ miracles: the lame got up and walked, Jesus walked on water, the blind were told to take up their mats and walk.

I don’t think this was an accident. Walking is something that we all understand – it’s a concept that spans cultures and countries and languages. After you learn to walk as a child, the action becomes as natural as breathing. It’s not a concept that requires deep thinking – but it is an activity that incorporates the body, mind and spirit. I think by using this illustration of walking, God was trying to emphasize the interwoven relationship between our physical ability to move and His work in our lives.

Exercise and physical activity require us to engage our body, sharpening our minds as we perform a physical task. The act itself allows us to become in tuned with our body’s capabilities and we learn to hone in on the inner workings of our physical selves. As we learn to hone in on our body, we can learn to hone in on our spiritual self as well, opening ourselves up to the intricacies of our spiritual nature.

When you’re exercising and working hard, you have the chance to focus only on putting one foot in front of the other, concentrate on lifting the dumbbell one more time or dancing one more step. You have the opportunity to truly be present and available to learn what God wants to teach you.

I know that the time I spent exercising, listening and praying this summer changed my heart – I don’t think that was by mistake. I would challenge you to seek God in your exercise, to pursue exercise as a way to seek God.

Awesome Laura, thanks again and lets all Walk with God this week.

Sunday’s “Inspiration for your Perspiration” 1/13/2013

Happy Sunday!  I hope you all had a wonderful week.

For this weeks post I am linking one of my favorite songs as our inspiration for the week.

I Am by Mark Schultz.

I have linked a YouTube video and also posted the words below because I find them so powerful.

I could not find an official video so I linked this one by Immerge

click here for the YouTube Video

I continue to work on the January Prayer Challenge (if you missed it click here).

When I hear this awesome song it reminds me how important it is to take that special time with Him each day.  The one who created it all.  From the morning to the evening stars and everything in between, from the beginning to the end.

I find the phrase “I AM” so powerful and this song touches my soul every time.

God is the great “I am”.

Enjoy and let me know how your January challenge is going….

I Am by Mark Schultz

I am the maker of the heavens
I am the bright and morning star
I am the breath of all creation
Who always was
And is to come
I am the one who walked on water
I am the one who calmed the seas
I am the miracles and wonders
So come and see
Oh follow me
And You will know

I am the fount of living water
Risen son of man
The healer of the broken
And when you cry
I am your savior and redeemer
Who bore the sin of man
The author and perfecter
Beginning and the end
Yes, I am

I am the spirit deep inside you
I am the word upon your heart
I am the one who even knew you
Before your birth
Before you were

I am the fount of living water
Risen son of man
The healer of the broken
And when you cry
I am your savior and redeemer
Who bore the sin of man
The author and perfecter
Beginning and the end
I am
Yes, I Am

Throughout the earth, I am
The universe, I am
In every heart, I am
Oh, where you are, I am
The lord of lords
The king of kings
The holy lamb
Above all things

Yes, I am
Almighty god your father
The risen son of man
The healer of the broken
And when you cry
I am your savior and redeemer
Who bore the sin of man
The author and perfecter
Beginning and the end
Yes, I am
Yes, I am
Yes, I am
Who I am

Get Yourself “Fooducated”

Looking to “clean up” your eating act for 2013.  Want to educate yourself a little more about the good, the bad and the downright ugly?  Then boy do I have a FREE App for you!

** please note I am not affiliated with Fooducate in any way…I just love it 🙂 **

Fooducate (click here for the website)

click here for the Fooducate Facebook page

I have mentioned Fooducate before but I thought January would be the perfect time to introduce those of you that don’t already know about it to this wonderful app.  I started using it about 6 months ago.  This is a really simple, yet extremely educational tool for your food shopping arsenal.   I took this quote direct from their Facebook page because well, I thought they explained it best.

“Fooducate is a personal grocery advisor, helping people make healthy food choices for their families. Fooducate’s nutrition app is available online and for iPhone and Android mobile devices”

So how does it work?  It’s simple…just download the app to your smart phone, scan the bar code of item you are thinking of buying (right off the package) and wahla.  You get a “Grade”  (from A to D) for that product.  As you can see this one got a B+. (Tuna just happened to be my lunch today.)  You will also see some helpful info about the item including FoodPoints for those of you counting.  If you tap on the item it will then bring you to a screen with more specific details of your item.   There is also an “Alternatives” tab , which is one of my favorite features.  The Alternatives tab will show you similar items that received the same or better score!  Awesomeness 🙂

Fooducate has been not only a great way to find healthier items, but an eye-opening experience.  You would be surprised how some of the “healthy” items in your cart stack up.

Now I agree this can be a little time-consuming at first, but once you know which choices are better, in the future you just scan new items before you add them to your cart.

You could also save time by going through your pantry first to check the score of  items your regularly choose.

Our household goal for 2013 is to try to choose that score no lower than a B-, MOST of the time.   Easy, maybe not but its a good goal.

🙂 🙂   One caveat…don’t scan cupcakes, NEVER scan cupcakes 😉  Save cupcakes for after a race…..Now back to my featured blog.  🙂  🙂

Fooducate also has a website where they …(taken from their Facebook page)

“publish a daily tip (more or less), where you’ll find tips and tricks to help make you a better shopper of nutritious food. Topics include nutrition fact labels, hard to pronounce ingredient names, “health claims”, and other marketing tricks to watch out for at the supermarket. We also discuss current events and public health policy.

So check out Fooducate and download it for free.  Let me know what you think and what “healthy” item ended up OFF your list. 🙂

Sunday’s Inspiration for your Perspiration 2013 – January Challenge!

Happy New Year!  Hope your Christmas and New Year was wonderful.

Welcome 2013 🙂

I have a January challenge for you (and myself).

The January 5-10 Minutes with God Challenge

Life is busy, and crazy, and goes so fast.  And did I mention busy?  So I have a January challenge for you all.  Will you commit to 5-10 minutes every day to spend with God?  Just 5-10 minutes out of the 24 hours in a day.

***Now I also realize some of you may already spend more time than this daily 😀 so would you pray for those of us taking the challenge or share this post with a friend? ***

Seems so simple doesn’t it, yet I can’t even begin to count the days I have NOT spent just 5 minutes with the one who should be the MOST important person in my life.  Sad…actually really sad.  You can pray or read your bible or just talk to Him.  Morning, night or anytime in between.  I am hoping our 5-10 minute challenge will be the beginning of something beautiful and become our daily time with God throughout the year.

Would you ever NOT give your spouse, children or friends just that short amount of time each day?  Me either, so why do we not spend even this short time EVERY DAY with God?  I will spend more time than that just writing this post!  And you know what, even when we “forget” Him, He NEVER forgets us.  Not for one minute of our lives.  So lets pray to him daily in both good and bad times.  I bet your 5-10 minutes becomes one of the most important parts of your day 🙂

I made this little reminder note for myself.  I am going to hang it on the mirror in my bathroom and one on my refrigerator.  Feel free to print one for yourself as a daily reminder.

January Prayer

Psalm 17:6
I call on you, my God, for you will answer me; turn your ear to me and hear my prayer.

Psalm 141:2
May my prayer be set before you like incense; may the lifting up of my hands be like the evening sacrifice.
