I have mentioned Fooducate before but I thought January would be the perfect time to introduce those of you that don’t already know about it to this wonderful app. I started using it about 6 months ago. This is a really simple, yet extremely educational tool for your food shopping arsenal. I took this quote direct from their Facebook page because well, I thought they explained it best.
“Fooducate is a personal grocery advisor, helping people make healthy food choices for their families. Fooducate’s nutrition app is available online and for iPhone and Android mobile devices”
So how does it work? It’s simple…just download the app to your smart phone, scan the bar code of item you are thinking of buying (right off the package) and wahla. You get a “Grade” (from A to D) for that product. As you can see this one got a B+. (Tuna just happened to be my lunch today.) You will also see some helpful info about the item including FoodPoints for those of you counting. If you tap on the item it will then bring you to a screen with more specific details of your item. There is also an “Alternatives” tab , which is one of my favorite features. The Alternatives tab will show you similar items that received the same or better score! Awesomeness 🙂
Fooducate has been not only a great way to find healthier items, but an eye-opening experience. You would be surprised how some of the “healthy” items in your cart stack up.
Now I agree this can be a little time-consuming at first, but once you know which choices are better, in the future you just scan new items before you add them to your cart.
You could also save time by going through your pantry first to check the score of items your regularly choose.
Our household goal for 2013 is to try to choose that score no lower than a B-, MOST of the time. Easy, maybe not but its a good goal.
