This past Saturday (Feb 9, 2013) I participated in my 2nd Virginia is for Lovers 14k. I was excited to do this race for a few reasons.
- The biggest reason was that last year at this time I was suffering from a pretty bad case of Plantar Fasciitis in my right foot. (you can read last years re-cap if you click here) I had developed PF at the very end of 2011, at the time however I had already signed up not only VIFL but also Disney Princess Half (also in Feb) and the Shamrock Half Marathon (March) for 2012. So I was knee-deep in training and I wasn’t about to throw $$ out the window!
- And I got to run it with my hubby and two of our best friends (also military) Which with our hubby’s deployments we don’t always get to do.
So this year I was VERY glad to be running VIFL pain-free with my sweetheart . The only pain Saturday was the biting wind and cold. Per the weather man the 9 am race (oh thank goodness it wasn’t earlier) was 33 degrees with a “feels like” temp of 22…oh and
breezy and down here by the shore apparently breezy is 25+ mph winds. For me this was by far the coldest race I have ever run. On the upside the day before (Friday) we had the same conditions PLUS rain. Whew glad we dodged that bullet!
The great thing about VIFL is that it is a nice change of scenery for a Virginia Beach race, it is not held down at the Oceanfront as many are. Change is good. We started out at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex and raced a mixed terrain of road, trail, gravel parking lot and even a small “hill” (the outdoor amphitheater’s walkway). I am also proud that I can now run, not walk most “hills”.
All in all it was a great run. Lots of fun Valentine themed costumes, Dj’s on the course and happy runners. Oh and lots of fun signs like “Cheesy Pick Up Lines” and I even saw a Run Happy and a Happy Pace sign . I got a quick pre-race picture with the local girls from MRTT. (Moms Run This Town)
My plan was to run this race at my Half Marathon training pace for the Disney Princess Half which is just 2 short weeks away. My pace was not super fast but I was comfortable for the entire run and finished with a PR of over 6 minutes from last year. Suck that PF . The last half mile I turned it up a bit since I had a lot more energy left than I had given myself credit for. I wish I had sped it up a little sooner, but I am still satisfied with my overall time.
This was a local J&A Racing run event and as always the after party did not disappoint. A plus for VIFL is that the after party is inside the Sportsplex. The medal was its usual awesome….
and the food was just perfect for a cold run. Tomato Bisque Soup served in a Bread Bowl via Bakers Crust with Yuengling beer and live music too.
So what’s up next? The plan for this week is to get one more long run of 10+ in before Princess! So excited to have some run and fun with the girls at Disney!
