Run Find Your Happy Pace

finding my happy pace in running and life

My First (and Definitely Not My Last) California Trail Race

This weekend I participated in my first trail race out here in California.  I had done only a few back in Virginia so I’m still basically a newbie, however I am pretty sure I am hooked!  I met a bunch of amazing runners out there and just set out to enjoy myself.  No pace or finish expectations.  For me this was all about the experience of trail running with a few added bonuses.  #1 it was a Saturday race which I just love and #2 I got to see some amazing friends set out on some Ultra distance racing adventures.

Hosted by Inside Trail out at the beautiful Fort Ord, the race distances stretched from the 10k to 25k, 50k  and 100K distances.  Being newer to the sport I opted for the 10k which for the most part was held on fire roads with a modest 900 ft elevation gain.  The course was a stunner none the less.  The combination of beautiful weather, lots of rolling hills and plenty of green, due to the recent rains and break in the drought, made for an awesome first trail race.

Beautiful!

Beautiful!

Inside Trail provided well-marked trails, along with great aid stations.  In fact I was so pleased that next year I am hoping to at least participate in the 25k.  The volunteers were friendly and I felt great support being a 10k runner as I assume the longer distances felt.  Here are a few more pictures from the day.    I am a bit sore in my hips from the hills but man was it totally worth it!

Do you enjoy trail running and racing?  Have you ever tried?

If you haven’t I suggest you do it at least once.  Who knows you might just get hooked!

Always a Wickedly Fun Time – Wicked 10K 2014

This is without a doubt one of my favorite races every year, the Wicked 10k in Virginia Beach.  Its like running with a bunch of crazies and I just love it!  And let me tell you some of these peeps do NOT mess around when it comes to costumes.  The winners this year were fantastic, especially the group winners.   Check these guys out!

Almost 6,000 people finished this year.

My Costume

I decided to go as a cheetah this year.  So fun.  I found a cute pair of leggings and an headband, bow tie, tail combo along with cheetah face stickers at Five and Below.  I think the whole thing cost me a whopping $10.  I found some temporary cheetah eye tattoos at another store (I had no idea there even was such a thing as eye tattoos?!) and BAM!  Instant costume.  Rahh!!

The Race:

So how was my race…it was just wicked 😉   I did not PR, however I was only off last years time by seconds.  Pretty sweet considering I just stared distance running again back in August.  I could not be more pleased considering how far my training has come since summer.  This is also one of the very first races that I completed using the Galloway run/walk method for the entire race.  So in essence I was even running faster than last year at an easier effort.

I also finally made it to my local Moms Run This Town (MRTT) pre race picture!  Wahoo!  Somehow I always miss those, lol.

Post Race Fun!

This year the post race party was back on the beach.  The weather was perfect the food was great thanks to Baker’s Crust.  I even had a beer, ok half a beer, which I never do.  I had a great time hanging out with Cara from Running in Sanity and her hubby.  We even won these sweet purple chairs in a cup stacking contest!  Who knew Cara and I had mad cup stacking skills?  If you ever get the chance to do Wicked you really should.

My 2013 Recap and Merry Christmas from Me and Running Santa?

First and foremost I want to say  a BIG, HUGE, GIGANTIC thanks to all of you who follow the blog, Facebook, twitter and/or instagram.  I started this page with no preconceived ideas other than to keep my family back home up to date on my running adventures.  You guys have been the ones to make the page a great success.  Blessing to you all, I have enjoyed getting to know and give / receive support from so many of you on our running adventures.

As for the blog:

Well all I can say is Wow!  2013 was a busy, busy year. I am so honored to continue to be a part of both Girls Gone Sporty and Sweat Pink Ambassadors for the second year.

New Communities:

This past year I was excited and blessed to add a bunch of new communities to my blogging circle including Running Bloggers, Happify, IDEA Fitness Bloggers and Miles to Blog.

I also had a blast being part of Team Pretty Muddy and a Color Me Rad Ambassador, 13 in 2013 and the Sub 30 5k Group.

Here is a great pic of all my medals (both “real” and “virtual”) I earned this year participating in 13 in 2013.

Dreams Fulfilled:

I fulfilled a dream to run with Team in Training at Nike Women’s DC back in March.  And in 2013 my and Cara (Running in Sanity) Cupcake Virtual Runs for Charity have raised thousands of dollars for both Team in Training and Susan G. Komen with your help.

I ran my first mud run, my first color run AND I finally pulled out a sub 30 5k!

 So what’s new in 2014?

I  am excited about continuing on with those great communities in addition I will be adding the following pretty cool items to my list:  Team Tough Chik  2014, Team Pretty Muddy 2014 and attempting to run 14 in 2014!

Have a wonderful Christmas

and I will catch up with you all again in 2014.

Wicked 10k Race Recap 2013

Last Saturday I participated in my third Wicked 10k race here in Virginia Beach.  The morning started out down right chilly with temps in the upper 30’s which is cold for this time of year in VA.  I was a tad worried that I was not going to be warm enough in my bunny costume, but in the end decided to go with it anyway.  I did however add a sweatshirt and gloves….brr.

This race is always an entertaining one.  While some run the race for time tons of people go all out for the costume contest and this year was no exception.  I am always amazed at some of the creativeness and just craziness of some runners.  There was a Scooby Doo crew complete with Mystery Machine Van, the entire Duck Dynasty crew running in a canoe and a Tiki….yes a Tiki and yes she finished the entire race wearing it!  Check out this awesome pics below..

For the first half of the race I Ran with my husband, something we never do because he is much faster than me.  He let me pace and we had a great time checking out the costumes and talking.  Problem is I paced a bit too slow.  By the halfway point we separated and both picked up the pace, at our own pace.  I was hoping to finish under last years time, but this day it was not meant to be.  I finished 1 min 15 sec slower than my previous year, but I still had a great time.

The after party had a live band, The Delorean’s 80’s band (check them out here) they were really fun to watch and listen to.  They play all sorts of 80’s music.  Everything from Billy Idol to Toto.  They are a very talented group of musicians and both my husband (who is also an accomplished musician) and I enjoyed the show.  People continued to dance and really get into their Halloween characters.  A big hit was hilarious guy dressed as “Richard Simmons”.  He and his side kick (a woman if full-out Jane Fonda brightly colored thong leotard and tight outfit) really got the crowd up on their feet and enjoying the music.  I wish I had gotten a good picture of them 🙁

J&A racing always does a great job.  Their races are always well run and the swag is always top-notch.  This year we got a long sleeve Halloween themed tech tee at packet pick up our finisher item (other than the awesome medal) was an insulated Wicked 10K coffee mug.  The only thing missing from the post race food was the usual delish bread bowl for our chili.  This year we just got chili in a cup, nevertheless it was much appreciated.  Thanks J&A!
